Our primary product, the Sunn hemp seed (Crotalaria Juncea), has its origin in India where it has been grown since the dawn of agriculture. It is basically a green manure, used as a cover crop for revitalizing poor land and which can additionally be used as a livestock feed and a non-wood fiber crop.

Sunn hemp is a fast-growing, nitrogen-fixing, legume whose seeds are used as organic fertilizers. It is extensively used as a soil improvement or green manure crop in the tropics and sub-tropics as it can produce 5,000-6,000 pounds of biomass per acre in 60- 90 days. It also can produce 120- 140 pounds of nitrogen in the same amount of time. It provides the benefits of a cover crop such as erosion control, soil improvement, plus resistance to rootknot nematode. Its ability to rapidly add nitrogen and organic matter to over-farmed soils makes it a favorite for improving soil quality and rejuvenating fields. The cultivar described here, 'Tropic Sun', produces a compound that is toxic to several nematode species, making it an excellent weapon for pest management.

Sunn Hemp is much easier to get incorporated into the soil when needed than sorghum, cow peas, and many other cover crop varieties. Sunn Hemp is the next generation cover crop for the farmers and the future of modern sustainable agriculture.
